Avonmouth
Geoff Collard was the Green Party candidate in Avonmouth for the 2010 Local Elections. There is no city council election in Avonmouth this year.
The Green Party opposed (and continues to oppose) the building of a biofuels palnt at Avonmouth. Despite the city council planning committee refusing planning permission for the plant (under public pressure, including the debate in the Council chamber in which Geoff spoke against the plant), the Communites and Local Governemnt secretary, Eric Pickles, gave the go ahead when the company appealed. However, the environment is now considered to include the world, not just the local environment, in planning decisions, so it means in future developers will have to take into accoutn the effecvt their plans have on the wider world. In the case of this biofuels plant it means that the fuel (which is going to come from SE Asia) will have to come from 'sustainable sources' which in theory mean no new areas of tropical forest cut down for biofuels in this country. However, this is hard to prove, and also there are the environmental transportation costs as well.
We remain opposed to biofuels. Biofuels remain at root an unsustainable form of energy, using as they do land to grow crops for oil instead of food. In a world likely to face increasing food shortages it is simply just crazy, as well as immoral.
