About Bristol West
Bristol West 2009 Local Election performance
The Green vote in Bristol West increased in every ward when this year’s vote is compared to the last time elections were held in each ward. For example the vote in Ashley increased from 1127 in 2007 to 1283 this time.
The biggest improvement in performance was in Redland where David Joseph came second for the first time with 25% of the vote. Other significant improvements were in Clifton where Gundula Dorey increased the Green share of the vote from 16% in 2007 to 19% this year. In Easton, which becomes part of Bristol West for the next General Election, the Green Vote increased from 560 to 938 and into third place almost up with Labour.
When the vote for each party in all the wards is added together the Green Party comes second, still well behind the Liberal Democrats. The Green vote in all Bristol West wards added together was 6694, Labour 5083 and the Conservatives 4971 all behind the Liberal Democrat’s 13145. So in a General Election if the Green Party can attract enough votes from disaffected Labour voters and from Conservatives keen to defeat the Liberal Democrats the Greens could win. The Greens will have an even better chance of winning if we can persuade people who are so dissatisfied with the Liberal Democrats, Labour and the Conservatives that they do not currently vote, to vote Green.
The Green Party came second in the following wards Ashley, Bishopston, Cabot, Cotham and Redland and third in all the rest. The Green share of the vote increased from 21% to 22%. It is interesting to speculate as to how well the Liberal Democrats would do without the significant free publicity that Stephen Williams provides through the money he gets from Parliament to send leaflets to his constituents.
So a great performance by the Greens and if this continues there will eventually be a goodly number of Green Councillors elected onto Bristol City Council from Bristol West.
