Cabot City Council Election 2011

Ben Appleby is the Green Party's candidate for Cabot in the City Council elections on 5th May 2011. Ben has lived in Bristol on and off all his life and in Kingsdown in the ward for the last 7 years and so knows Cabot extremely well.

Ben says:

"I went to University in Edinburgh where I studied Politics. It was the Cold War and the mad logic of mutually assured destruction that first got me interested in Green Politics. I spent too much time at University campaigning against the Torness nuclear power station and remain deeply against nuclear power seeing it as a dangerous military technology that has no place in a clean green future."

Of course, in the light of the horrific and tragic ongoing civil nuclear disaster in Japan, the Green Party's consistent opposition to nuclear power as being too dangerous is being shown to be the only sane policy. The wider consequences continue to worsen with radioactivity leaking into the sea. Once radioactivity leaks into the wider environment the consequences can be devastating and far-reaching. Nuclear power can never be safe.

The Greens have strong support in Cabot, consistently increasing our vote to come second in 2007 and again in 2009, when our candidate Don Brown beat both Labour and the Conservatives, polling 22% of the vote.

The Green Party fully supported the Castle Park Users Group’s application to the city council to have Castle Park declared a Town Green, and continues to oppose all moves to build on any of the existing green space of Castle Park. The city council still would like to sell off part of the park to developers, and a Green voice on the council would send a powerful message that that is not what the people of Cabot and Bristol want.
