Clifton City Council Election 2011

Your Green Party candidate for Clifton in the city council election on May 5th is Georgina Bavetta.

The Green Party's vote share has steadily increased over the last four city council elections in Clifton, and in the last election in 2009 our candidate Gundula Dorey polled almost 20% of the vote, beating Labour into 4th place.

Georgina writes:

I am privileged to be standing as the Green Party's candidate in Clifton ward. The charm of this community and the friendly, welcoming attitude of its residents made me feel instantly at home when I first moved to Lower Clifton Hill as a student.

I am currently studying for my degree at Bristol University. I'm reading politics and philosophy, and run the Green Party Society. As a student, I am acutely aware of the importance of community cohesion, and aim to address problems such as noise control and anti-social behaviour by encouraging students to engage more with the local people and issues.

2011 will be a difficult year for Bristol City Council, with funding cuts threatening to diminish the quality of service that Clifton receives. As a Green councillor my priority would be protecting the long-term interests of residents against the short-termism that has motivated recent Council decisions such as the sell-off of green spaces in Bristol. The temporary challenges facing the Council should not cause them to lose sight of fundamental goals such as working towards making Bristol a sustainable city.

Localism is extremely important to the Green Party. Not only does it benefit the environment, but it also supports communities. In accordance with this I aim to protect the interests of the local shops and businesses which give Clifton its character against the spread of chain stores which all look the same wherever you are. Clifton is unique, and should remain so.

I will be proactive in representing your views, and will approach local residents and businesses rather than relying solely on consultations.
