Having started on Saturday 26 November, Bristol Greens are active again campaigning for improved rail services. Specifically, to build on the success of the Severn Beach Line over the last 3 years, and provide a 40 minute service between Avonmouth & Parson Street from 0600 until Midnight, seven days a week. The focus of this action is to put pressure on Bristol City Council (BCC) to include subsidy for the improved cross-city service in the 2012/13 budget that is currently being drafted.

On Saturday afternoon, local Greens joined the protest outside the site of Costa Coffee at the bottom of Gloucester Road, which opened yesterday. The area is vibrant with small, independent businesses that are very popular with local inhabitants. Bristol City Council (BCC) has recognised this, and has legislated to protect the area from becoming awash with cafes and bars.

PRESS RELEASE - Bristol Greens Oppose South Bristol Link Road in Favour of Decent Public Transport

The Liberal Democrat controlled Bristol City Council (BCC) has made a huge mistake in the pursuit of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Schemes & the South Bristol Link Road (SBL). Local Greens are furious at the prospect of new road construction, especially as it will tarmac yet another piece of our rapidly dwindling countryside. BRT schemes have also shown themselves to be follies in places like Cambridge; having the benefits of neither conventional bus provision nor the dedicated routes & fast pace of railways. They are a cheap patch on an under-funded system.

Bristol Greens on the November March against Pension Cuts

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Written by Geoff Collard Friday, 02 December 2011

Bristol Green Party members joined the march through Bristol city centre on Wednesday to show their anger at the public service cuts and attacks on pensions caused by the greedy bankers. The Green Party supports the unions and wants the bankers to bear the brunt of the economic crisis which they caused. We are outraged that the Government still refuses to cause the bankers any hardship, whilst the poorest in our society are really being hurt by these cuts. Cameron's myth that 'we are all in this together' would be a joke if it wasn't so insulting. Gus Hoyt, the Green Party's councillor for Ashley, joined Southmead Green Party candidate Chris Millman in holding the Green Party banner.

Britain to Oppose EU Vote against Tar Sands Extraction

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Written by Geoff Collard Tuesday, 29 November 2011

This Friday 2nd December the EU votes on whether to effectively outlaw tar sands oil for use in the EU. Tar sands are recognised as one of the most polluting of all oil and other fossil fuels. The EU wants to outlaw highly polluting fuels, which would include tar sands.

Opposition to the proposed EU Fuel Quality Regulations is being led by, surprise surprise, that 'greenest government ever' - Cameron's and Clegg's Britain.

Oil from tar sands is particularly hard to extract because of the nature of tar sands - the oil is in the sandy shale soils and can only be extracted by 'crushing and washing' the shale, which needs far more energy than conventional oil extraction. Coupled with the fact that most of the tar sands lie under Canada's vast virgin forests, the emissions from the felling of the forests and the degradation and loss of these forests will be nothing less than an environmental disaster, both locally and globally.
