Green Party Proposes Budget To End Council Cuts
Written by Graham Woodruff Wednesday, 01 February 2012
Bristol Green Party has today published an Alternative Budget Proposal which would avoid future cuts in council services. This would be achieved by a modest increase in Council Tax of 3.49%.
Such an increase would mean the surrender of a financial inducement offered by the Coalition Government in exchange for a freezing of Council Tax. The Greens believe that the acceptance of this 'bribe' is a false economy, exchanging a guaranteed income stream for a one off payment. The Government has indicated that this payment of £4.5m, equivalent to a 2.5% increase in Council Tax, will not be repeated.
By protecting Bristol's tax base, the council would be better able to determine its own longer-term strategy, instead of having its priorities dictated by Government sticks and carrots. The proposed increase would produce £1.8m in 2012/13, rising to £6.3m in 2013/14 and subsequent years.

Having started on Saturday 26 November, Bristol Greens are active again campaigning for improved rail services. Specifically, to build on the success of the Severn Beach Line over the last 3 years, and provide a 40 minute service between Avonmouth & Parson Street from 0600 until Midnight, seven days a week. The focus of this action is to put pressure on Bristol City Council (BCC) to include subsidy for the improved cross-city service in the 2012/13 budget that is currently being drafted.

PRESS RELEASE - Bristol Greens Oppose South Bristol Link Road in Favour of Decent Public Transport
Written by Daniel Casey Thursday, 15 December 2011
07/12/11
The Liberal Democrat controlled Bristol City Council (BCC) has made a huge mistake in the pursuit of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Schemes & the South Bristol Link Road (SBL). Local Greens are furious at the prospect of new road construction, especially as it will tarmac yet another piece of our rapidly dwindling countryside. BRT schemes have also shown themselves to be follies in places like Cambridge; having the benefits of neither conventional bus provision nor the dedicated routes & fast pace of railways. They are a cheap patch on an under-funded system.
