Bristol’s two Green councillors have made a statement of their support for the Occupy Bristol camp on College Green.
Gus Hoyt, Tess Green, and many other Green Party members have visited the camp on almost a daily basis, and have been impressed by the peaceful, inclusive & respectful manner of the protest. Care is also being taken of the physical environment of College Green.
Cllr. Hoyt said, “They have repositioned their tents to prevent damage to the grass, and their fire is well contained within a wheelbarrow. The Green Party has given practical assistance in obtaining portaloos and helping in the disposal of the campaigners’ rubbish.”
“While others talked of evictions, we sought to address practical issues.”
“We do not share others’ concerns about potential interruption to the traditions of Remembrance Sunday nearby. The occupants have given assurances that they will do everything possible to avoid causing an obstruction. Last week, they actively supported the participants of the Hardest Hit march; protesting against cuts in disability services. We see no reason why they should treat people taking part in Remembrance any less well than they have others.”
Tess Green stated, “At the Bristol partnership meeting, I suggested that no action be taken against the group, and they be allowed to stay on College Green for as long as they need to get their message across.”
