"Not so fast..." says Green Party over BRT

Bristol Green Party has expressed grave reservations about the proposed Bus Rapid Transport system (BRT), which it regards as an unsatisfactory compromise.

Cllr. Gus Hoyt said:

“This project shows no real vision of 21st Century urban design. BRT fails many environmental tests, delivering only limited carbon reduction while actively encouraging people to enter the city by car and by plane.”

“We should be looking at expanding and re-investing in the local rail network, which is quicker, cleaner, and has a lower ticket price.”

Although the Green Party can see some potential in one of the three proposed routes, BRT3 (North Fringe to Hengrove Park), as it serves significant commuter needs, it regards BRT2 (Ashton Vale to Temple Meads) and especially the so-called South Bristol Link as poor value for money because they will do little to ease congestion, whilst causing significant damage to green spaces.

Cllr. Tess Green said:

“The South Bristol Link is simply a ring road by another name, and the Ashton Vale route is just a glorified bus lane which will not serve most of the area through which it passes.”

The party is also concerned at the danger of a cost overrun, which would have to be met in full by the Council. This could blight the City’s finances for years to come.
