Public transport for public benefit

We need a well maintained network of pedestrian and cycle routes.

Public transport needs to be cheap, regular and running along the routes that people want to travel.

The existing expensive complicated slow system needs a radical overhaul. The heart of this is our proposal to build a new bus station next door to Temple Meads Rail Station.

Public Transport should be for the benefit of the public and provided by a publicly owned body.

Our policies promote cycling, walking and the use of public transport. Our immediate aims would focus on

1. Making public transport cheap reliable, direct, regular and easy to use .

  • We would start with a complete overhaul of the Bus Routes. We propose a new bus station alongside Temple Meads station creating a public transport hub for the greater Bristol region Redevelop the Plot 6 area near Bristol Temple Meads with a bus station to provide a transport hub for Bristol. Bus routes would be redesigned to improve occupancy. Real time information would be provided at bus stops
  • We would encourage the Local Enterprise Partnership to bid for money from the sustainable transport fund to reopen the passenger rail link with Portishead.
  • We want  integrated ticketing for Greater Bristol with Oyster and travel card equivalents
  • We want Greater Bristol public transport to be overseen by an integrated transport authority

2. Discouraging car use and encouraging walking and cycling by

  • Supporting current plans for 20 miles per hour speed limit within Bristol city
  • Removing parking privileges for councillors and council staff
  • Controlled parking for local communities, which would begin to improve bike lanes and pavements for cyclists and pedestrians
  • Transport plans for all schools, to promote walking and cycling by staff and students
