Letters > What 'Green stem of labour'? - Charlie Bolton, 12 March 2005To: Western Daily Press Dear Sir I am always amazed when Labour activists or supporters use scare tactics to try and frighten people into voting for them. Richard Pierce (Stay with green stem of Labour, letters, 11 March 2005) says voting Green 'could let Michael Howard in by the back door'. To lose this election, Labour will have to lose a 140 seat majority. To lose it in one election would be an act of extraordinary incompetence. The fact that he, and other Labour supporters up to and including the mighty Blair himself use the same scare tactics, can only mean that they believe in their own incompetence. Labour has done some good things (mainly spending more on education and health). It has also done some extremely bad things - going to war in Iraq, trying to outTory the Tories on asylum, and pushing through draconian anti-terrorism legislation without satisfactory debate, closing down one-third of urban post offices, abandoning the fuel price regulator, and not being prepared to stump up the cash to make the Bristol-Portishead line suitable for rail passengers. I urge all voters to vote for what they believe in, and not to be intimidated into voting for what they are against. If it really is true that Labour could lose the election, then it is obvious that they deserve to lose. Charlie Bolton |
