Climate Change: we care, but does the media? - Charlie Bolton, 26 May 2005

To: Bristol Evening Post

Dear Sir

I am not sure if Alan Elkin meant to lump the Greens in with the other political parties in his critique of air emissions (US FLIGHTS ARE SYMPTOM OF DEEPER PROBLEM, letters page, 26/5/2005), but I would like to defend our corner.

Mr Elkin says he 'doesn't see any dynamism from this or any future government of whatever party because of the fear of upsetting its paymasters: industry and, further still, the USA'.

Well, the Green Party would.

As the Green Party candidate for Bristol South in the recent general election, I tried to make climate change an issue. I also tried to highlight some of the solutions - such as the ones he suggested - improved energy efficiency, more renewables and a tax on aviation, as well as having strong local economies (reducing the need for so much travel).

Unfortunately, the media - with a couple of notable exceptions - doesn't tend to give us much of a look in at election time, so our opportunities to raise issues (even the biggest issues facing our generation) are limited.

We will of course keep trying...

Yours

Charlie Bolton
