Letters > Labour's 'green transport' credentials - Jon Lucas, 13 March 2005To: Western Daily Press Dear Editor, Richard Pierce (letter, 11 March) makes some strange claims for Labour's green transport credentials. Firstly London's congestion charge was not brought in by Labour, who were too timid to give it support. Ken needed to rely on the Green's support to bring this necessary measure in, and Labour only joined in when they saw how successful it had been, allowing Ken back into their fold. Secondly, he claims that buses have improved. Around Bristol we have a private monolopy, First Bus, which has given us the most expensive bus service in Britain, one that is notoriously unreliable and which fails to provide for many people's necessary journeys. For instance, nobody from Kingswood and Downend eastwards into the north-eastern quarter of the city can reach Temple Meads by bus, an extraordinary situation. The government is at fault, as it has failed to take any steps to reregulate the private monopolies, leaving us completely at their mercy. If you want a greener transport service, the party to vote for is the Green Party. Yours sincerely, |
