No Guarantees with Nuclear - Charlie Bolton, 26 October 2006

To: Evening Post

Dear Sir/Madam

Am I the only person to think that continuing news of on-going cracks in nuclear reactors highlights just what a chancy business this is?

On the one hand, the industry continually tells us how safe nuclear power is. On the other, we keep hearing these stories telling of cracks, derailments and other things suggesting to the contrary. Then, we get told that it is all safe, despite these things.

The problem is, of course the waste. The waste from nuclear power stations will need to be stored for hundreds if not thousands of years. If we get cracks in the reactor at a nuclear power station after just a few decades, how is it possible to say with any conviction, that waste can be stored safely? The answer is of course, you can not make any such guarantee.

Yours,

Charlie Bolton
