Swimming Pool Closure - Glenn Vowles, 3 October 2006

To: Bristol Evening Post

Dear Sir/Madam

The decision to close the Jubilee Swimming Pool in Knowle is a mistake. Not only that, Knowle councillor Gary Hopkins has broken his election pledge to "fight any plans to close Jubilee Pool".

He now thinks there is "no realistic alternative", having agreed to the closure plan as a member of Bristol's Cabinet.

I wonder how the voters of Knowle feel about being let down like this?

Glenn Vowles

Knowle, Bristol.

Good to get pool debate out in the open

I Was most interested to see a second letter from Glen Vowles following up my reply ("Efforts to save pool must be continued", Post, October 10).

I agree that it is good to debate things in the open, and Green Party politician and candidate Mr Vowles would do better to declare himself rather than snipe from the undergrowth.

Apart from Mr Vowles, I have been contacted by only one constituent about the Jubilee pool issue.

This does not mean that residents do not care about us having local facilities, old or new, but that I and my colleague Councillor Chris Davies have been very careful over the last few years to lay all the facts in front of people.

Had Mr Vowles studied the history and heard all the information he would be better informed, but then that might make it more difficult to make party political points.

The Post's other correspondent incorrectly states that there is a reduction in capacity. In fact, the new Hengrove facility is bigger than the two closing pools combined.

I do, however, welcome the fact that Mr Vowles agrees with our position that putting all the eggs in one very large basket is not the ideal answer.

Councillor Gary Hopkins, Executive Member for Environment and Community Safety, Liberal Democrat councillor for Knowle.
