Big Party Turn-Off- Glenn Vowles, 30 September 2006

To: Bristol Evening Post

Dear Sir/Madam

It's no surprise that the public hold politicians in such low esteem after having read about and watched chunks of the Labour Party conference. It showed them at their worst at times, with them being more concerned with personal power battles now that there will soon be a change of leader and deputy leader.

It was virtually a new-policy-free zone for the whole conference, with only a few new announcements and not on what one might call earth- shattering issues.

They were not moved to announce new measures to take action on, say, inequality, a greener future, global poverty, climate change or globalisation, but instead were moved to support Gordon Brown as the next leader, or avoid questions about who they support, or give private briefings to journalists against an opposing camp in the leadership struggle.

Is this what politics in a big party is really all about? If so, who would want to vote for them?

Glenn Vowles

Knowle, Bristol.
