A Genuine Alternative For St Paul's - Daniella Radice, 9 March 2007

To: Bristol Evening Post

Dear Sir/Madam

As the local election candidate for Ashley and member of the Green Party I welcome your intention to respond to the views of local people and this is why I would like to make the following comments on the proposed development of the Dove Lane area of St Paul’s:

First of all the Green Party welcomes the prospect of development within this largely residential area. Normally, we would object to inappropriate developments but in this instance we welcome a genuinely brownfield development that has the prospect of being of real benefit to the local economy. However, we ask that environmental considerations are taken properly into account and that the development should be sustainable.

Why not take this opportunity to build a zero carbon development to rival that being built in east London's Royal Docks by the London Development Agency ?

Features include rainwater harvesting, wind turbines, solar panels on roofs, community greenhouses and vegetable plots, bicycle club and car pool, combined heat and power plant fuelled by tree surgery waste, walls made from local gravel and reclaimed concrete from demolition.

It is vital to the future of the planet that we decrease our carbon emissions and we can do this effectively using existing technology through current development schemes.

Street:
We advocate private as well as public green space to allow for local food production and street trees growing fruit.

Transport:
The development should encourage cycling through the provision of cycle racks and cycle lanes and incorporate a 20 mph speed limit.

Neighbourhood:
We also feel that the development should address the pressing local concerns of drug use and street prostitution, perhaps incorporating a drug treatment centre. We also advocate the incorporation of a safe environment for sex workers within the development where they could meet their clients without causing a nuisance to local residents.

Yours

Daniella Radice
Bristol Green Party
