Yet Another Lib Dem U-Turn - Glenn Vowles, 2 April 2007

To: Bristol Evening Post

Dear Sir/Madam

If Jubilee pool really suffers from the disadvantages given by Councillor Gary Hopkins, why, then, did he say on his last election address that he would fight all plans to close Jubilee?

It's interesting, isn't it, that he is now arguing for closure very strongly, where once he argued the opposite?

It's also the case that he and his Lib Dem colleague Simon Cook each emphasise different arguments.

Councillor Cook said that "the private finance company funding the scheme (for a new leisure complex with pool at Hengrove Park) would only provide the cash if Bishopsworth and Jubilee pool closed because it does not want competition" ("Pool closure will harm our environment", Post, March 19).

So, far from deciding to close Jubilee pool because it is not viable, or has serious deficiencies that can't be overcome (as Mr Hopkins is now suggesting), the closure decision seems to have been taken in order to guarantee that any new pool is making a big, fat profit for private investors.

Yours

Glenn Vowles
