Join the Trident protests
16th February 2007
For immediate release
Green Party members in Bristol are supporting efforts to prevent the replacement of Britains costly and dangerous Trident nuclear weapons system.
This Saturday (17th February) Bristol's Cathedral and Quakers invite everyone to join a silent vigil on College Green between 2.30pm and 3.30pm.
The following Saturday, coaches will be leaving Bristol at 8.30am to join the national demonstration in London, organised by CND and the Stop the War Coalition, with the twin aims of stopping Trident and bringing troops home from Iraq.
Stephen Petter, speaking on behalf of the Greens, said:
"Tony Blair seems hell bent on encouraging a new global nuclear arms race. How can he possibly press ahead with this hugely expensive and dangerous venture, while telling other nations that they don't need nuclear weapons and mustn't have them?"
"Our political dependance on the USA for key parts of this so-called British deterrent has actually drawn us into helping their war in Iraq. It's time to give it up, to join the other developed countries that manage perfectly well without relying on a nuclear arsenal - a permanent threat of unthinkable and unlawful violence against the people of other countries."
