Bristol South Green Party is one of three Green Parties in the Bristol area that work together to promote Green politics. Our policies are generally agreed city-wide and of course our priority is to get Green representatives on the City Council.
We made the breakthrough in May 2006 in Southville with the election of Charlie Bolton as Bristol's first Green councillor.
There are plenty of big issues south of the river. The developments at Hengrove Park - and how best to get to them. The new hospitals. The proposed ring road, pouring traffic into quiet residential areas. The failing schools. The need for jobs. The road congestion and the air pollution that goes with it. The loss of open space, post offices and swimming pools. The pockets of poverty.
Having a councillor has brought new opportunities to influence council activities and to raise issues within the council, and many of our members are helping Charlie develop a strong local Green voice on a whole range of issues.
Bristol South Green party hasn't got all the answers, but it's doing its best to find them; it knows that the usual solutions just don't work.
Meetings
We usually meet up each month to 'do the business'. This meeting moves around, so if you've not been told the venue, best check by ringing (0117) 985 2795 or 971 7023. We welcome bona fide guests. These meetings often concentrate on topical issues. In between we use email to make sure everyone can be in touch.
Elections
Parliamentary:
| In the Bristol South seat we had the pleasure of saving our deposit last time round - no small feat in our 'first past the post' electoral system. Next time round, our candidate is Cath Slade, who lives in Southville. |

Part of our patch (the Brislington wards and Stockwood) lies in the Bristol East constituency. Here, our candidate is Martin Cottingham who lives in the constituency and grew up in Stapleton.

Local:
No more elections are scheduled south of the river until 2010. Even so, the 2009 elections in the north and east of the city will be important for all of us, because they could bring more Green influence to the council.
Green Party candidates contested all 12 the Bristol South wards in the May 2007 City Council elections. Our vote varied from 4 to 40 percent, averaging just over 15% - but we won none of the seats. Pity about the electoral system !
