Greens encourage the consumption of local food - that is food that comes
from as close as reasonably possible. If it does not come from a
supermarket, then this should mean a reduction in the food miles the food
travels from field to plate. If it's organic, so much the better. For you AND for the environment.
This list is not exclusive - it includes shops we know about who sell
local foods. If you can tell us of other outlets, or about other types of

The Southville/Ashton/Bedminster area is lucky - it is possible to get
hold of most of the things you need locally. Please note, 'best' means
closest - it is not a measure of quality (you will have to make up your
own mind about that!)

Vegetables
Best - Leigh Court veg box scheme - 5 miles from Southville
Leigh Court Farm is organic and local! It's box scheme is delivered to the
Southville Centre on Thursdays.
Second best - Farringtons veg - found at the Tobacco Factory market, third
Sunday of the month. Farringtons is around 15 miles from Bristol, and is
in conversion to organic.
Honourable mention - Ashton Fruit and Veg on North Street stock a range of
organic and local fruit and veg. Country Produce (also at the Tobacco
Factory market) do the same. Both try to buy UK produce, local where
possible.
Meat
Best - Summerleaze Poultry - from near Street attend the market at the
Tobacco Factory. All meat comes from Summerleaze Farm
Second best - Wherlocks the butchers on North Street sell Mendip lamb,
Scottish beef and Wiltshire pork. They also have a very good reputation
Bread
Best - Parsons Bakery - a Bedminster based chain with a number of outlets,
including North Street
Second best - Herberts bread from the Southville Deli and Hobbs bread at
masala
Wallingtons Bread at the Tobacco Factory market
Fish
Trout - trout from Cockleford farm is available at the Tobacco Factory
market. Cockleford Trout comes from near Cheltenham - about 40 miles from
Bristol
Masala - Masala deli (the 'other end' of North Street - are taking orders
for fish.
Rumour - there is a rumour of people interested in opening a fishmongers
on North Street.
Game
Hicksgate Farm at the Tobacco Factory market come from near Keynsham
(about 5 miles) and come with different types of game.
Cheese
Best - Southville Deli sells Bath Soft Cheese and a range of other local
cheeses
Second best - Cherry Tree Farm (at the Tobacco Factory market) sells a
range of Somerset cheeses
Milk
Equal best - The milkman (Dairy Crest do Rachel's) , or The Southville Deli for local organic milk.
Wine/ beer
Southville Deli stocks Beer Factory beer (ie about 300 yards!) and some UK
wines.
Other groceries
The Southville Deli stocks a range of goods, many of which are reasonably
local.
Nearby
The Farmers Market in Corn Street, Bristol runs every Wednesday from 9.30 to 2.30, with a big range of stalls selling locally produced foods.
Nearby, in St. Nicholas Market, Gert Lush sells a big range of quality cheeses, many of them locally made
