Stockwood returns two councillors to the Bristol City Council; at present both of them are part of the minority Conservative group. In May 2007, one seat will come up for election after a four year term. Labour, LibDems, and Tories all have new candidates this time round.

Peter Goodwin Peter Goodwin is our Green Party candidate on May 3rd 2007. Unlike all the other candidates, he lives in the ward (off Sturminster Road). The others all live north of the river - in fact Stockwood hasn't been served by a resident councillor for years.

In 2006, Peter saw a remarkable fivefold rise in the Green share of the Stockwood vote - from 2.4% to 13.9%, putting the Greens well ahead of the Liberal Democrats

Peter is now retired after a career in local authority social services, and also has extensive experience in local politics as a campaigner on green issues.

In Bristol recently he has been actively involved in attempts to

  • improve the bus services,
  • protect the green belt around Stockwood against a new ring road and the development that would come with it,
  • raise building standards, and
  • raising petitions and getting answers from the council about key issues
Peter believes his 'green' credentials and philosophy will give electors a reliable guide to what to expect of him. On the ring road issue, for example, he would not be fighting other members of his own party! He believes local councillors have a vital role to help Stockwood people build on their strengths, lifting the ward - and the city - out of its lowly position in so many national league tables.

Did you see...
The Tory promise to "fight ferociously to preserve our precious green belt for future generations"?

Along with a few other outrageous or downright dangerous electoral claims, it's included in the glossy bumph they've been spreading round Stockwood.

Did you know....
that the Tories haven't raised a finger to stop plans to abandon huge chunks of our Green Belt, especially between Stockwood and Keynsham, and south of Whitchurch, so that Bristol can 'grow' far beyond the needs of natural population increase?

The new townships, are planned to run to 6,000 homes in Stockwood Vale area, and another 10,500 outside Whitchurch. Together, that's another four Stockwoods, all on nearby Green Belt land.

Bristol Green Party has objected.

But the Tories and their developer friends love it!

The ward stretches from Wells Road in the west to the heights of Stockwood overlooking Stockwood Vale in the east
