May I start by wishing you all a very happy holiday season and my hope that we all spread the cheer by giving to those we know, and those we do not, during these difficult times.
It has been a very busy month here at the newly renamed City Hall. With our elected mayor in place a new culture of decision-making and ‘getting things done’ has entered into the halls and offices throughout the city.
True to his word George Ferguson called on a cross-party cabinet to advise him and to run their respective departments. He based these on the electoral results of the mayoral race which meant there were to be three from Labour, and one each from the Conservatives, Lib-Dems and Greens. To cut a very long and tedious story short: the cabinet is now made up of Geoff Gollup (Con), Simon Cook (LD) and myself (Green) and is chaired by George Ferguson who has the only power.
My portfolio is Neighbourhoods and the Environment, which is a very influential across the city. With this responsibility comes opportunity and I am greatly optimistic of that George and I will achieve much in these far reaching areas. I have also asked for – and been granted – the Equalities portfolio.
On a more local level I have continued to be extremely busy as your ward councillor and I wish to assure you that this role will in no way diminish as all my other roles stack-up. In fact, now being in the ‘streamlined-cabinet’, I have found I am more effective at achieving successes for local residents and schemes as I have greater access to council officers. Please do keep contacting me with your concerns, pressures or visions in our local community. My email address is unchanged at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I look forward to working with you all to help make both Ashley a healthier, happier and a better place to live. Have a very merry and green holiday season.
All the best,
Gus Hoyt, Ex-Councillor for Ashley
Rob Telford, Ex-Councillor for Ashley
